FDA Approved Irradiated Lettuce and Spinach

See that symbol? Don't buy anything with that symbol!

Okay maybe some of you are okay with this, but I'm sorry, seriously? Does any government agency do anything remotely close to what the people of this country wants? With the whole green movement in full force, tell me who exactly has been petitioning to have our food zapped? I'm so sick of all of this. When are they going to stop cramming chemicals into our food?

I'm done. Check out this site. http://www.organicconsumers.org/irradlink.cfm

  1. There may definitely be problems, but one point of irradiation would be to REDUCE the amount of chemicals that are required to keep food safe. I think some people are concerned with the irradiation altering the food in situ (which could be considered "adding" chemicals to it), but the way you worded the last sentence made it sound like they have to spray the lettuce with something in order for the irradiation to work. That isn't the case.

Not an advocate for irradiated food, but also keeping an open mind in case it allows us to reduce other, more harmful practices.

  2. I didn't mean to confuse anyone by throwing in the term chemical...let me clarify...irradiation from my understanding is done via an electron beam. I just meant, I've had enough of chemicals, radiation, hormones, antibiotics, etc. being added to our food. I'm sure a certain amount of something is necessary, but it's all gotten out of control. More annoying is that all the healthier options aren't exactly consumer friendly for those on fixed incomes, so they aren't really given a choice. How is that fair?

My main issue w/ this is that there's been no long term research as to it's safety...seems the FDA has been bypassing long term testing if you notice the amount of drugs being recalled lately.

They're saying it's safe, but without the long term studies to prove that, they're basically using us as guinea pigs. And the more reading I've done on this, the more I'm inclined to believe the negatives outweigh the possible positives to irradiation.

As for me, I think I'll just continue to grow my own pesticide free lettuce and spinach. If the gov is right, fantastic. But if they're not...well, I don't want my daughter to be the litmus test to find out.

(btw as a disclaimer, I'm a bit of a conspiracy nut, so please, if you disagree, that's your right and I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm just pretty hard headed about the things I believe in lol)
